Accountable Tech Co-Founder and Executive Director Nicole Gill issued the following statement after the Senate’s unanimous passage late Thursday:
“Over the last several years, we’ve seen extortion through non-consensual intimate imagery spread like wildfire, used to harass everyone from elected officials and those running for office to teens and middle schoolers. It’s a terrifying trend that’s been supercharged by unregulated AI, making it easy to create convincing and harmful deepfake imagery. And all of this is made far worse by tech companies ignoring demands from victims to remove content and treating the sharing of non-consensual intimate images as an acceptable cost of doing business.
Yesterday, thanks to the tireless work of victims and advocates, we’re one step closer to offering victims the protection and dignity they deserve. Once passed, the Take it Down Act will criminalize the publication of non-consensual intimate imagery and deepfake pornography and require social media platforms to remove violative content once victims notify them of non-consensual imagery — two commonsense provisions that are long overdue and desperately needed.
We applaud lawmakers in the Senate for moving this bill forward and urge House members to act swiftly to make these vital protections law.”
