Accountable Tech Statement on Court’s Decision to Grant Preliminary Injunction Against the California Age Appropriate Design Code

Accountable Tech Co-Founder and Executive Director Nicole Gill issued the following statement after the US District Court for the Northern District of California’s ruling Thursday:

“This injunction is a massive set-back for the safety and well-being of our kids. The Age Appropriate Design Code would enact basic measures to protect kids and teens from online harm – and NetChoice’s lawsuit continues to prove that Big Tech companies would sooner hurt young users than sacrifice a penny of their billion dollar profits. This ruling represents a fundamental misunderstanding of these platforms’ construction, which the AADC seeks to improve.

The companies hiding behind Netchoice’s lawsuit — including Meta, Google, X, Snap, and Reddit — are rolling out flimsy new features in an attempt to distract from the fact that ‘Teen Accounts’ and ‘Family Centers’ will never amount to the protections offered by the AADC. Let’s call their so-called safety measures what they are: PR moves designed to cover up their systematic dismantling of real guardrails.”
