Accountable Tech on the Kids Online Safety Act

Accountable Tech Executive Director and Co-Founder Nicole Gill issued the following statement on House Republican leadership’s decision to exclude the Kids Online Safety Act in the year-end government funding bill:

“For decades, Big Tech’s endless pursuit of profit has come at the cost of young people’s well-being. The Kids Online Safety Act, which garnered unprecedented bipartisan support, signaled a turning point in Congress’ willingness to finally address the scourge of social media harms that platforms have dutifully ignored despite troves of evidence and whistleblower testimony.

“No child’s life is worth losing to protect Big Tech’s toxic business practices and profits. But in refusing to take action, Speaker Johnson and Majority Leader Scalise are knowingly putting more kids’ lives in danger despite hearing pleas directly from parents who have lost their children and young people who have been exploited online. They have made it clear that Big Tech comes before the young people suffering at its hands.”
