Accountable Tech Co-Founder and Executive Director Nicole Gill issued the following statement following the dismissal of FTC Commissioners Alvaro Bedoya and Rebecca Kelly Slaughter:
“The unlawful termination of FTC Commissioners Bedoya and Slaughter marks a dangerous escalation in President Trump’s campaign to dismantle nonpartisan, independent oversight of Big Tech corporations. This blatant power grab isn’t just unprecedented – it is illegal, period. By firing two commissioners who have worked to implement guardrails against corporate abuse, the administration has made its loyalties crystal clear – corporate interests over consumer protection.
Americans should be deeply alarmed by this coordinated effort to remove the checks and balances that protect ordinary citizens from unchecked corporate and governmental power. This move only gives Big Tech CEOs an even longer leash to exploit users in the interests of profit. Without independent federal oversight, the Davids are left to fight the Goliaths on their own.”
