Accountable Tech Executive Director and Co-Founder Nicole Gill issued the following statement on the passage of the Vermont Kids Code:
“It’s clear that momentum is on the side of young people fighting for safer online spaces as Vermont becomes the third state to pass age-appropriate design code legislation with the Vermont Kids Code. We applaud Vermont legislators for resisting the industry push to defeat this legislation and prioritizing the safety, privacy and well-being of Vermont’s youth. We look forward to its enactment into law and urge Governor Scott to protect our kids from online harms over Big Tech’s relentless pursuit for profit.”
Accountable Tech is a member of the Vermont Kids Code Coalition and worked to pass the Maryland Kids Code signed by Governor Moore into law earlier this week and the California Age Appropriate Design Code signed by Governor Gavin Newsom into law in 2022 – a first-of-its-kind measure to provide safety-by-design and privacy-by-default protections to children and teens online.
