Accountable Tech today praised the passage of New York’s RAISE Act, which, if signed into law by Governor Hochul, would make New York one of the first states to require basic AI transparency standards. The bill – supported by Accountable Tech and youth activists from across the country – requires the largest AI developers to establish a safety plan to protect against automated crime, bioweapons, and other widespread harm and destruction. The bill is currently awaiting the action of Governor Hochul.
Accountable Tech Co-Founder and Executive Director Nicole Gill released the following statement:
“With the passage of the RAISE Act, New York lawmakers are taking a monumental stand for responsible AI. If signed into law by Governor Hochul, the RAISE Act will hold Big Tech companies accountable for safety standards that are commonplace in other industries, including requiring that firms publish safety and security reports, report safety incidents, and have a plan for avoiding catastrophic disasters as a result of their products.
In our world of untested and rapidly escalating AI technology, this bill will ensure AI companies are putting the safety and well-being of New Yorkers ahead of their own profits – and mark a seismic shift in the fight for AI safeguards. We urge Governor Hochul to sign this bill immediately.”
