Accountable Tech Executive Director and Co-Founder Nicole Gill issued the following statement on the Maryland General Assembly’s unanimous passage of the Kids Code, which now heads to Governor Wes Moore’s desk:

“Despite Big Tech’s efforts to defeat this bill, families and advocates have prevailed to pass landmark legislation to give Maryland’s youth the safer online experience they deserve. The bipartisan and unanimous passage of the Kids Code offers children and teens protections from the industry’s toxic business practices that prey on their data and privacy. It is now on Governor Moore to sign this bill into law and to do right by the parents and young people who have suffered in the hands of Big Tech.”

Accountable Tech is a member of the Maryland Kids Code Coalition and worked to pass the first-of-its-kind California Age-Appropriate Design Code signed by Governor Gavin Newsom into law in 2022 requiring online platforms to provide safety-by-design and privacy-by-default to children and teens.
