Facebook’s Oversight Board Needs to Speak Up or Step Down

Take action to stop Facebook from profiting off hate and undermining democracy. It’s time for the Oversight Board members to speak up or step down.

Facebook is refusing to enforce even its own rules, instead allowing harmful disinformation, racism, and violence to flourish across the platform. And where is Facebook’s Oversight Board, which Mark Zuckerberg touted as the answer to problems like this? The board and its members remain silent on the sidelines, reduced to Facebook PR props.

The Oversight Board was supposed to be up and running by 2019, tackling Facebook’s most important content issues. But it’s still months away from being operational. And whenever they finally do begin to function, they can only hear cases on individual posts that have already been removed for violating Facebook’s policies. That means anything that remains on the platform – like false ads, hate speech, and voting misinformation – is outside of their purview.

Facebook is just using the board for cover as they continue profiting off hate and undermining our democracy. Read Accountable Tech’s full report – Move Slow and Fake Things: Examining Facebook’s ‘Oversight’ Board.

Send a Message to the Oversight Board

You need to take action to stop Facebook from profiting off hate and undermining democracy. It’s time for the Oversight Board members to speak up or step down.

The below individuals serve on Facebook’s Oversight Board. They were supposed to have great power to rein in Facebook’s most pressing issues, but unfortunately, they were sold a bill of goods. The board has been defanged and reduced to being a PR prop, while the company continues to profit off hate and undermine democracy. Board members surely took this role with good intentions, but if they don’t take action now, they’ll be complicit in Facebook’s corruption.

Spread the word. The members of Facebook’s Oversight Board must demand real authority now or step down from the board:
